Message from Superintendent Polm Regarding Potential Student Protests

As many of us are aware, since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, there has been a lot of media coverage around student protests.  We know that some of our students may choose to participate in such events.  We should support student voice as a critical part of our educational process, and we should consider real world events as powerful learning opportunities.  Since 1965 in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District, the Supreme Court has affirmed that students have free speech rights.  The key is that they are not substantially disruptive and that they are respectful and safe.

Our principals and school resource officer worked collaboratively on a letter to families to share our position, and that we will operate classes as normal.  The national planned events are March 14, 2018 at 10 am and April 20, 2018.  We have also shared that typical school requirements exist for attendance.  Finally, we shared that there will be no suspensions should students select to participate.

Schools are called to remain neutral in political situations.  This is a tough one, as we are talking about school safety.  I advise that we are all understanding of the concerns and help our students understand other ways to engage in civic discourse such as contacting their legislative representatives through letters, calls, and emails.
