June 17, 2021

The district has created a new half-time district administrative position who will be responsible for the oversight of Alternative Learning Experience programs in the district. This role will serve as the OCEAN Principal as well as oversee the pilot online program next school year. Additionally, the ALE Director will work with staff and the community to review the recommendations made by the ALE Study done earlier this year.

Sarah Rubenstein has accepted the job as half time OCEAN Principal and ALE Director. Ms. Rubenstein has worked in the Port Townsend School District for eight years, currently serving as the District Communications Director and Maritime Discovery Schools Project Director. Ms. Rubenstein has also accepted another half time role for next year as the Place Based Learning Director. Through this role she will continue the work of the Maritime Discovery Schools vision of the school district. “I am excited for the opportunity to lead the OCEAN School and help further the vision for Alternative Learning in the Port Townsend School District. In my combined roles I will be able to support place-based learning across the entire district, and the place-based and experiential learning emphasis of OCEAN.” says Sarah Rubenstein.

Incoming Superintendent Dr. Linda Rosenbury facilitated a community forum with OCEAN staff and families Wednesday, June 16 to allow the community to understand about the new role of OCEAN Principal, to meet Ms. Rubenstein, and to listen to community feedback.
